Over half the world menstruates at one time or another, but you’d never know it. Isn’t that strange? – Margaret Cho
Menstrual care brands have spent decades advertising and designing their products in a way that upholds misogynistic cultural taboos associated with periods. From scented single use products to ‘charcoal infused’ reusable sanitary pads that are supposed to neutralise the ‘odour’ of bleeding, many menstrual care products perpetuate the image of periods as smelly and dirty. They are not, by the way. Simply change your sanitary towel at normal intervals to avoid any odour!
These companies, reflecting wider cultural expectations, have persuaded us to believe that our menstrual care products ought to be ‘discreet’, maintaining the idea that periods are embarrassing and make others uncomfortable, and that we should hide the fact we are on our period.
And then there’s the idea that menstruators must not show any sign of pain, discomfort or perceived weakness during their period, worrying they may be considered poor workers, less capable or productive than their male counterparts, or appear less fun.
Changing social attitudes towards periods could entirely change the way we experience them. That includes the choices we make about what menstrual care products we use, and how we dispose of them. The culture of shame, secrecy and embarrassment around periods has a negative effect on our self esteem. It also impacts the environment when we are encouraged to buy environmentally unkind products because we believe negative misconceptions about our periods, and feel we need products that solve ‘problems’ of ‘smelly’, ‘dirty’, ’embarrassing’ menstruation.
Dispelling Period Myths
Here at Peach and Bumble we want to help break the outdated taboos, secrecy and shame around periods. Our sanitary towels are not scented, or made with charcoal to ‘neutralise odour’ because we want to dispel the myth that periods smell.
When designing our pads, we focused on stylish colouring, and selecting a soft, comfortable, durable fabric, because menstrual pads, like other wearable items, should make us feel good and they should look good too!
Period Products to be Proud of
We selected pretty peach and cream coloured fabric for our sanitary towels, because we know that a bit of period staining on the inside of your reusable sanitary pad is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about! We don’t expect you to show your menstrual care products off to every person you meet, of course, but we hope that our pretty peach parcels will empower you to be confident not to have to hide your period products.
Environmentally Friendly Periods
Our hope is that our menstrual pads will aid our customers to help smash the stigma around periods, and support them in making a choice that is much kinder to the environment and their bank accounts!
Thank you for caring for our environment!
