Insulate Britain, Extinction Rebellion and Fridays for the Future are getting lots of media coverage recently, but often for action that most people can’t imagine themselves joining in with. This is your reminder that you don’t have to block roads or get arrested to be a climate activist or take action on environmental issues and make a positive change. There are ways to rebel against the system that play to your strengths and what’s possible within your circumstances and that suit your personality, talents and skills.
It can be as simple as starting difficult conversations in your communities about climate facts and social implications of a warming planet. Maybe you could share information on your social media account.
Follow natural and social climate scientists on Twitter and help amplify their voices, cutting out the mainstream corporate, profit driven and industry captured media.
You could start to look at ways you can reduce your personal environmental impact through diet, consumption, and energy use and help others to make lifestyle changes that you’ve successfully made, sharing tips or offering support. Going pant based is the most effective thing an individual can do to reduce their environmental impact! You could start growing some of your own food if you have a small space to do so in your garden or on your balcony.
You could commit to buying only things you actually need, and buying second hand where possible. You could start a group sharing material resources in your community – things like books, or tools, or clothes. You could make visual or performance art about the environment. Or buy or watch climate art and talk about it. You could write poems or stories or music about it.
You could read up about climate change and the environment. You can switch your bank account to one that doesn’t invest in fossil fuel infrastructure, or projects that harm the environment. You could switch energy provider to one that uses more renewables. You could car pool, cycle or walk more. You could ask your employer and your favourite shops and restaurants what they’re doing to reduce their environmental impact.
There are so many ways to help. I hope, if you believe the science, and see that the politicians and media aren’t doing what they need to to save us from this mess, that you will set aside some time for this.
